Is your name a domain name?

A little over a year ago I purchased brandoncoppernoll.com and bcoppernoll.com to start building a personal brand. I set up a blog and now write on it two to three times a week. My goal is to provide information about web development, internet marketing, search marketing and business blogging, and it is a great avenue for family and friends to keep up with what has been going on in my life. My personal brand is to become a leader and strategist in the topics aforementioned, and hopefully I can teach you some things along the way.

A while ago I wrote a piece about when to include blogging on your resume. My main point was when you post about industry specific items you should definitely include your blog as it helps business show that you are a voice (big or small) in your industry. You take pride in what you do.

Your domain name can become a vital piece to your personal brand, and it can become a great marketing tool for yourself as you build a reputation in your industry. Online resumes are becoming much more common today, and a great place to locate your resume can be your name as a domain name. There are other uses for having your name as a domain name:

  • Protect your identity. No, I’m not saying your identity is in jeopardy from identity thieves as we know them, but if someone is doing a Google search for “Brandon Coppernoll” I am sure my site comes first.
  • Career motives. Become a voice in your industry by posting your thoughts about recent changes or the future. Post your resume on your site. Post a portfolio.
  • Keep in touch. Social media has created a great way to keep in touch with family and friends, and by creating your own web presence on your personal domain you can have a very flexible and viable way for them to find and keep in touch with you on a different level.

I plan on continuing improving this site as I move forward with my career, and I will always be trying new tools and techniques.

Now that I have given you my thoughts on why you need your name as a domain name what are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you!

I agree. I was not able to secure my name as a domain name as someone else already registered it. I had to go with therealbruce.com which works ok, I guess. I did go ahead and register my daughter’s name so when she gets older she will have her name as a domain name.

It depends on what you’re looking for in a registrar. There are many different companies that all provide similar services. What you should look for is a company that puts forth its best effort to provide security for your domain. It has to be able to give you tools to manage your domain effectively when the need arises. The best rated according to http://www.consumersearch.com/domain-registration is namecheap.com, and the most popular is certainly GoDaddy.com.
