Does your CMS provide SEO tools?

I built a robust content management system (CMS) for Fusework Studios known as the Client Dashboard in 2006, and I have provided updates for it ever since. This CMS was built using ASP (Active Server Pages) and gave the client an ability to create real legitimate pages to be crawled by search engines to assist in search engine optimization (SEO).

This blog and some Web sites we've provided at Fusework Studios also use the WordPress engine which does a fantastic job at assisting in SEO as well as content management. Being that WordPress is mainly a blogging tool it also has functionality to assist in alerting search engines of new content.

Most modern content management systems provide SEO tools. These tools are not enough to provide a solid foundation for search engine marketing or optimization. There are things that you can do to build a better relationship with search engines in relation to your content.

  • Use keywords in your title tags.
  • Use keywords in your H1, H2 and H3 tags.
  • Use keywords frequently and often in the first two paragraphs of your content without taking away from readability.
  • Where applicable use keywords in your URL or Web address.

Most content management systems will give you the tools to do things but like most machines they will not know inherently what you are trying to do. Compendium Blogware is perhaps the closest system I've used that knows what your goals are and tell you how well you're accomplishing them as you write your content; however, someone has to put in that information before you use it to tell you how well you're doing.
